Severe cases are not rising and, most importantly, related deaths are really down despite the surge.

I am not worried too much about the current surge of Covid-19 cases. Severe cases are not rising much and, most importantly, related deaths are really down despite the surge. This may be due to two factors (1) the current strain of virus may be spreading fast but much less deadly and (2) the most vulnerable, older people, are largely vaccinated. Tokyo Covid-19 Deaths (Per Day) Jan 499 (16.1) Feb 432 (15.4) Mar 201 (6.5) Apr 141 (4.7) May 182 (5.9) Jun 105 (3.5) Jul (23 days) 23 (1.0) Let's put this in perspective. In Tokyo, 330 people die daily on average. The highest cause of death is cancer with about 93 daily. The largest number of death by cancer is lung cancer (18 daily), for which smoking is its main cause. The second highest cause of death in Tokyo is heart failure with about 50 daily. The third highest cause of death in Tokyo is aging with about 29 daily. The death by pneumonia is about22 daily. The death by infuluenze is about 0.9 daily. 2019 Tokyo Data for Deaths by Causes Total 120,870 (331.2 daily) Cancer 34,082 (93.4 daily) Lung cancer 6,735 (18.5 daily) Heart failure 18,473 (50.61 daily) Aging 10,534 (28.9 daily) Pneumonia 8,158 (22.4 daily) Influenza 351 (0.96 daily) In comparison, the most recent Covid-19 related deaths (July 2021) is 1.2 daily. The number of deaths by Covid-19 has really come down. The current death rate of Covid-19 is only 5% of pre-Covid pneumonia deaths. It has come down to be almost same as regular influenza. Smoking is killing people 15 times more than Covid-19.
